Threats prompt Solomons women to stay clear of politics

3:02 pm on 2 July 2010

The interim president of the Twelve Pillars to Peace and Prosperity Party in Solomon Islands is calling on people to stop threatening women who plan to contest next month's elections.

Delma Nori says her party has received information that some women have withdrawn after they were threatened.

Ms Nori has told the Solomon Star women have the right to stand, and her party will not tolerate this sort of behaviour.

Ms Nori says women should be allowed the freedom to contest the election without any threats from men.

She urges women candidates to be strong and take courage.
