Solomons extends election nominations by one day

1:20 pm on 5 July 2010

The Solomon Islands Electoral Commission has extended the close of nominations for the national general elections by a day.

The Chief Electoral Officer, Polycarp Haununu, said the date has changed by one day because the original date, July the 7th , is Independence Day and a public holiday.

According to the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation, Mr Haununu says the Commission has sought advice from the Attorney General's Chamber and they have advised that under the law, the close of nomination cannot fall on a public holiday.

He says this means that the closing date for nominations is now July the 8th and the close of withdrawal of nomination is July the 11th.
