Kiribati welcomes investigation to disprove bribery claims

The President of Kiribati, Anote Tong, says he'd welcome an investigation to prove Kiribati hasn't been influenced by Japan over whaling.

Britain's Sunday Times has reported Kiribati and the Marshall Islands were among six countries willing to consider selling their votes on the International Whaling Commission to support Japan's scientific whaling efforts.

Mr Tong has echoed the Marshall Islands in denying the report.

He says there have been offers in the past but Kiribati rejected them very clearly.

"I'm very happy to have our records investigated because there is no truth in it. We've always rejected any offer because we don't want our consideration of the issue to be compromised on that."
