Position of candidates on ballot paper for Solomon Islands election drawn

10:03 am on 9 July 2010

The position of candidates on the ballot paper for the Solomon Islands general election has been drawn.

At the close of nominations yesterday, Returning Officers in each constituency drew the names of candidates to decide their position on the ballot paper from first to last yesterday evening.

Returning Officers conducted the draw in the presence of candidates and their agents and members of the public to make sure the process was open and transparent.

The Chief Electoral Officer, Polycarp Haununu, says this system is done because there is only one ballot paper used in the general elections.

He says they must draw the names to decide freely and fairly which candidate appears first on the ballot paper, and which appears last.

Mr Haununu says later today Returning Officers will post the list of candidates standing in each constituency.
