8:14 am on 21 July 2010

Papua New Guinea's New Britain region has been hit by a 6-point-6 earthquake.

The early morning quake was at a depth 56 kilometres.

Weather bulletins say no destructive widespread tsunami threat exists.

However, reports do say earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicenter.

Two tremors, the stronger measuring 7.3, occurred on Sunday night and were widely felt in West New Britain.
