Man in American Samoa charged with first degree murder over shooting of police officer

American Samoa's Commissioner of Public Safety says the fatal shooting of a police officer shows the need to arm the local force.

The man alleged to have shot and killed Detective Lusila Brown outside the High Court at the end of last week has appeared in court.

He has been charged with charged with first degree murder and firearms offences and is being held without bail.

Commissioner Tuaolo Fruean says the police force has been deeply affected by the shooting.

"Well, my message is to calm down. I know it's tough. I think I'll have a chance to talk to the Governor and also members of the Fono to arm the officers."

The Commissioner says Lusila Brown will be deeply missed by the police force.
