Police officers in American Samoa are still reeling from the fatal shooting of one of their colleagues late last week.

The man alleged to have shot and killed Detective Lusila Brown outside the High Court, Siaumau Siaumau Jr, has been charged with first degree murder and firearms offences.

According to court documents the defendant had blamed the officer for the arrest of his mother Leafaitulaga Siaumau earlier last week.

Commander Terry Letuli says Lieutenant Brown was unrelenting in his approach to every case.

"It's something that we never thought would happen, even though it happens everywhere else, we never expected it to happen here. So, the Commissioner has already spoken to us, to be more professional, in the way we handle this case."

Commander Terry Letuli says Lieutenant Brown was one of the best officers in American Samoa.

American Samoa's Governor Togiola Tulafono has condemned the shooting as an horrific and senseless act of violence.
