The Cook Islands Minister of Finance says he's confident the parliamentary Budget session starting later this week will go smoothly.

Parliament hasn't sat for months due to political upheavals amid fears of a vote of no confidence, but Cabinet has announced there will be a sitting on Thursday.

Wilkie Rasmussen says he expects MPs will behave in order to pass a supplementary budget for the current year and the new main budget.

"So I think they'll come in with a view that we need to pass the budget because it's necessary for the country to tick, and of course with the expectation that Parliament will be called [will rise] before the end of this year."
