Guam senator much to be sorted out ahead of military buildup

3:20 pm on 29 July 2010

A Guam senator says he is absolutely certain the miltary build-up will not be completed by 2014.

The shifting of 8,000 troops to Guam from Japan is set to occur by 2014 and expected to also involve around 9,000 family members.

Officials in the United States this week have cast doubt on whether it will happen by this date, even as the US deputy defence secretary, William Lynn visits the territory

Guam Senator Frank Blas Jr. says he spoke to the deputy secretary about addressing Guam's longstanding issues with the federal government.

"Being involved in this process as early as 2006, and even at that time, there was a timeline that was set. And you recognise everything that needs to happen, and knowing what the resources are, and what the capabilities are, as well as what the infrastructure can withhold, and withstand, there is no way that this full military build up exercise will be completed by 2014."

Senator Frank Blas Jr. says Guam's leadership and the federal government need to improve their interaction.
