National Alliance Party conference canned amid leadership row

6:28 am on 6 August 2010

There are reports in Papua New Guinea the Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare has abrogated the constitution of his National Alliance party to allow his son, Arthur, to assume the leadership.

This is the latest development, reported in the Post Courier, of a turbulent time in the main party in the Government's coalition.

The National Alliance conference planned for next week in Minj has now been scuttled with the party president saying there is no vacancy for leader.

Meanwhile our correspondent says there are reported attempts to undermine the support of Deputy Prime Minister, Don Polye, who's made no secret of his desire to succeed Sir Michael.

Oseah Philemon says this could help the Opposition, which has already offered to make Mr Polye its candidate for Prime Minister if he switches allegiance.

"What is happening now in the National Alliance camp, I believe, is playing into the hands of the Opposition because if Don Polye learns that there are moves to undermine him, then obviously he is going to start looking at his options, and he's got quite a few options left."
