Solomon Islands Deputy PM latest election casualty

6:19 pm on 6 August 2010

The upsets continue in the Solomon Islands general election, with the deputy Prime Minister, Fred Fono, losing his constituency.

The defeat of the high profile MP, Patteson Oti, has also been confirmed after his supporters reacted angrily to an unofficial result suggesting he'd been ousted.

Jo O'Brien reports.

"Deputy Prime Minister Fred Fono is the latest casualty in the election, losing in his central Kwara'ae constituency. The defeat of OUR Party MP, Patteson Oti, is also now official. Early this morning, his supporters allegedly threw stones at a counting station and looted the shop of the relative of a winning candidate when the unofficial result was announced. Others to fall by the wayside include National Party leader and Finance Minister, Francis Billy Hilly and Deputy Speaker, Clement Kengava."
