Northern Marianas doctor shortage is easing

3:17 pm on 10 August 2010

A doctors' shortage has eased at the Northern Marianas' Commonwealth Health Center.

The centre is now just five doctos short and expects to hire more in the next few months.

This is because it has a newly approved J-1 visa waiver that allows it to bring in non-U.S. nationals.

Esther Muña, acting deputy secretary for the hospital's administration, says they had been facing a dire situation needing more than 10 physicians but new recruits have cut this to five.

She says two more emergency doctors are still needed, along with another surgeon and two in pediatrics.
