Commercial plane forced into emergency landing in New Caledonia

9:00 pm on 11 August 2010

A Qantas Airbus A380 was forced, by adverse weather, to make an emergency landing at New Caledonia's La Tontouta airport this morning.

Oceania Flash reports that the aircraft had been en route to Sydney from Los Angeles.

But Oceania Flash reports that the giant plane encountered difficulties on the small runway and could not turn off the tarmac in the usual way.

This meant no other aircraft could use the runway and several scheduled international flights were delayed.

It was eventually towed out of the way.
