Solomons' police say Honiara death not election related

1:44 pm on 12 August 2010

The Solomon Islands Police say the death of a man in Honiara in the early hours of this morning is not related to the national election.

The Regional Assistance Mission has confirmed it fired shots during the callout, but it says the cause of death is still being investigated.

Jo O'Brien reports

"The Security Forces have confirmed a Guadalcanal man in his 30s died and another was injured following a security incident attended by Royal Solomon Islands Police and RAMSI police and military officers. The Regional Assistance Mission says they were called out by police to attend a drunk and disorderly incident, and that a group of people in a Honiara residential area were attacking each other by throwing rocks. It says the cause of death has yet to be established, although it's been confirmed that shots were fired by RAMSI security forces. The election period has been marred by incidents of damage to a ballot box and papers, a counting station and property. But the Police Commissioner Peter Marshall has ruled out any suggestion this incident was election related violence."
