Anger in American Samoa at missing tsunami donations

1:39 pm on 19 August 2010

Many tsunami disaster victims in American Samoa are angry that much needed donations to aid their relief are still yet to be given out.

It has been almost twelve months since last year's tsunami, which affected the Samoas and Tonga.

Representative Taotasi Archie Soliai says not a cent of the more than half a million US dollars in private donations has been spent by victims, and he's asked the Government to explain.

Our correspondent in Pago Pago, Monica Miller, says many people are wondering what's happened to the money.

"Representative Soliai's main concern is that it's nearly a year since the September 2009 tsunami. But donations that were given by people here and abroad to help these tsunami victims, still have not been dispersed. Naturally people are angry and they think that this is unjust for the Government to hold on to this money."
