In American Samoa, StarKist Samoa tuna cannery officials have agreed to give lawmakers an update on the status of the company, which plans to lay off up to 800 workers before the end of the year.

Representative Galu Satele Jr. had called for a hearing to find out about the company's layoff plans, which were announced in May, as well as its future intentions in American Samoa.

StarKist is set to meet with the House Commerce Committee next Thursday, with general manager, Brett Butler, agreeing to testify.

Mr Satele wants to know the exact number being laid off and when the next phase will happen - the first layoffs are due at the end of this month.
