A police officer in Samoa has been admitted to the national hospital for treatment after reportedly attempting to take his own life by drinking a poison.

A police source says the officer is involved in an internal investigation relating to the alleged disappearance of money he collected as part of his duties.

The man had been ordered by a senior officer to recover the unaccounted for money or face the consequences of a breach of duty.

Our correspodent says this is believed to have prompted the man's apparent attempted suicide.
