An Australian-based Fiji democracy group says Fiji's moved to temporarily suspend itself from Melanesian Spearhead Group to try and win back the support of the other members.
Fiji says it won't attend formal meetings of the MSG to allow the other countries to resolve the chairmanship issue.
Fiji was to have assumed the chair in July but this was scuttled amid concerns an unelected leader would be in charge of the body for the first time.
The interim regime then hastily called its own summit, dubbed Engaging the Pacific, but the President of the Fiji Democracy and Freedom Movement, Usaia Waqatairewa, says Fiji's trying to get back on side by being seen to do the right thing this time.
"Well that's a welcome move as far as we are concerned because the illegal leaders of Fiji have to learn a hard lesson. They can't sit on the same table and dialogue with leaders who are democratically elected."
