Kiribati President says relief from climate change erosion dependent on international help

The President of Kiribati, Anote Tong, has conceded that his Government lacks the funds to repair damage to homes in coastal areas because of erosion.

Mr Tong says he believes climate change has caused erosion damage amounting to millions of dollars.

He says he's told Parliament that recent requests for Government help have to be turned down.

"To say quite honestly to the people complaining that homes are being eroded, say that we don't have the resources to fix your homes, to protect homes, until we can generate the resources from the international community, I am afraid that the answer has to be that you have to move back."
