Departing judge accuses Tonga PM of unwarranted attack

4:16 pm on 6 September 2010

The judge who chaired Tonga's Ashika inquiry says the country's Prime Minister has made an unwarranted attack on the judiciary.

Warwick Andrew resigned from his position as Supreme Court judge but claimed he was directed to leave early and he has now left the country.

The Prime Minister Dr Feleti Sevele said the judge's early resignation had left Tonga in the lurch and said his claims that the government had demanded he stop working as a judge are false.

Warwick Andrew says he deeply regretted the injustice his departure meant for those with cases only partly heard and who'll have to go through the expense of starting again.

He's also said he's saddened by his departure from Tonga and wishes its people well.
