Early voting in American Samoa to start today

9:02 am on 10 September 2010

American Samoan voters who won't be in the territory on election day, November 2nd, can cast their votes from today.

Those eligible for the absentee ballot are residents who'll off island because of military commitments, conferences, medical treatment or holidays.

Our correspondent in Pago Pago, Fili Sagapolutele, says early voters need to cast their ballot before they leave the island.

"What's important to the Election Office at this point they need to get as many in to cast their ballots as soon as possible before they leave the island. Because once they are off-island, they cannot vote by overseas absentee ballot because they do not qualify under the election law."

Fili Sagapolutele says travellers who want to vote early must present proof of their temporary absence from American Samoa.
