Fiji Times is resilient and will continue to excel, says Motibhai

The Fiji-based Motibhai Group says the Fiji Times will operate an independent unit and that all the newspaper's staff will be retained.

This comes after Motibhai's acquisition of Fiji's oldest newspaper for an undisclosed sum yesterday from Australia's News Limited.

The sale follows a decree by the Fiji interim regime that forced Fiji-based media outlets to be transferred into 90 percent local ownership.

The Motibhai CEO and Chairman Mahendra Patel says he is confident the Fiji Times will continue to be the country's leading newspaper.

"Every change of ownership that the Fiji Times has gone through over the last number of years - Wilke Group to Herald Sun, Herald Sun to News Limited, and now to Motibhai - the changes have been serious and we see no reason why these serious changes will not be contained."
