10:51 am on 16 September 2010

Voters in Tuvalu are at the polls today to elect a new 15-member parliament for a four-year term.

26 candidates, including all the sitting MPs, are contesting the poll.

The secretary to Government, Panapasi Nelesoni, says the polling stations opened this morning at 8am and will close at 4 o'clock.

He says results begin to arrive in the capital, Funafuti, by early this evening.

"Tuvalu is made up of scattered islands, nine islands altogether, so we will receive the results from the islands via email, and we hope the final results will be in midnight"
