The President of New Caledonia, Philippe Gomes, has visited Anaa atoll in French Polynesia where a film is being shot of the 1988 Ouvea hostage massacre in New Caledonia.
21 people, mainly Kanaks, died when French forces intervened to end the hostage crisis.
There has been controversy in New Caledonia over the film project of the French film director, Mathieu Kassovitz, prompting him to shift the planned filming out of New Caledonia to French Polynesia.
A key politician in Noumea, Pierre Frogier, had written to the French Polynesian government objecting to the film project going ahead but the president of French Polynesia's assembly, Oscar Temaru, rejected this, saying the events in Ouvea should not be forgotten.
