Fiji regime extends emergency rule for 30 days

The Fiji President has extended the Public Emergency Regulations for a further 30 days.

Ratu Epeli Nailatikau signed off the order before leaving for the United States.

The interim regime imposed the emergency rules in April last year when it invalidated the constitution and dismissed the judiciary after a court ruling declared that the regime was illegal.

The regime had promised that it would lift the PER provisions once it had imposed its media decree.

The media decree was issued in June but the regime has subsequently reneged on its promise.
