PNG's rugby league team has a new coach

10:40 am on 25 September 2010

Incoming Papua New Guinea coach Stanley Gene will take charge of his country for the first time in tomorrow's annual Prime Minister's 13 in Port Moresby.

Gene, who retired from representative rugby league after the 2008 World Cup, replaces former Queensland playmaker Adrian Lam as Kumuls coach, after he quit last week amid rumours of infighting.

Vinnie Wylie reports.

"The Kumuls will be looking for a good performance as they begin preparations for next month's Four Nations tournament, which also features world champions New Zealand, Australia and England. Gene has named Cronulla Sharks hooker Paul Aiton as captain for the match, with Rodney Pora as his deputy. The Prime Minister's 13 will be led by Brisbane Broncos second-rower Corey Parker, and includes former Australian international Matt Bowen and Fijian wing Akuila Uate."
