CNMI government shutdown risk persists

9:43 am on 27 September 2010

There is a continued risk of a government shutdown in the Northern Marianas this Friday.

So far only three of the 10 major differences in the Senate and House of Representatives' versions of the budget bill have been resolved.

A contentious issue is the planned work hour cuts, with the House insisting on a 16-hour reduction per pay period and the Senate adamant on an eight-hour cut.

Members of the conference committe have also yet to make a final decision on each of the lawmakers' annual discretionary fund, currently set at more than 86,000 US dollars.
