The US House of Representatives has passed a bill recognising the importance of political self-determination for the people of Guam.

The bill, introduced by Guam's Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo, clarifies Congressional intent that the Secretary of the Interior has the authority and obligation to facilitate political status education programmes.

The legislation has been amended from the original document introduced almost a year ago.

It will now be sent to President Obama for his signature.

Ms Bordallo says that as soon as it becomes law, she will request federal funds be provided for a political status education programme.
