Surprises were in short supply on the opening day of the Oceania Sevens Championship in Darwin, with hosts Australia and World champions Samoa both ending the day with three wins from as many matches.

Samoa held off a plucky Papua New Guinea side 24-7 in the tournament's opening game before thrashing Tahiti 50-0 and Niue 31-5.

Home-town favorites Australia opened with a nine point victory over Tonga before racking up 57 points against Vanuatu, and squeezing past the Cook Islands 19-7.

Papua New Guinea rebounded from their opening loss to record wins over Niue and Tahiti, while Tonga scored a try on full-time to seal a tight 22-14 win over the Cook Islands.
