American Samoa's top health official resigns

7:49 pm on 4 October 2010

American Samoa's Health Department director, Tuiasina Dr Salamo Laumoli, has resigned.

Tuiasina has not offered any reasons behind his resignation publicly and Governor Togiola Tulafono's office has merely confirmed that the top health official's resignation letter has been accepted.

However Togiola has thanked Tuiasina for his service at the cabinet post since early 2009, paying tribute to his work responding to the H1N1 virus as well as the aftermath of last year's tsunami disaster.

It's understood Tuiasina will remain in government service, working on a project for the American Samoa Government.

Tuiasina, a graduate of the Fiji School of Medicine, served as LBJ Medical Centre's chief of dental services from 1993 until his retirement in 2007.
