Teva i Uta strike settled as broad French Polynesia action looms

4:07 pm on 5 October 2010

An eight-week strike in the French Polynesian township of Teva i Uta has ended.

The strike was called over planned cuts to public service provisions which the unions now have accepted.

The stoppage was accompanied by road blocks and acts of vandalism.

Amid calls for the resignation of the mayor, Tina Cross, a broadening of the strike to hit the fuel sector was announced.

Although the conflict in Teva i Uta has been settled, the strike notice still stands and threatens to cripple the transport sector.

Meanwhile, staff at the university say they will strike on Friday in protest at announced cuts.
