Yip in French Polynesia court for alleged abuse of public funds

A French Polynesian assembly member and former minister, Michel Yip, has appeared in Tahiti's criminal court for alleged abuse of public funds.

He is alleged to have used his assembly commission's role to divert funds to his wife, Melanie Mairau.

The prosecution has demanded a six-month suspended jail sentence and a 90,000 US dollar fine for their actions.

According to the charges, she was employed as his chief of staff, earning 9,000 US dollars a month while failing to carry out her tasks as expected.

A ruling is expected an the end of next month.
