PNG opposition says Sir Michael Somare should sell jet

7:19 pm on 11 October 2010

Papua New Guinea's opposition leader Sir Mekere Morauta says the Prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare, should sell the Government's 49 million US dollar Falcon jet and spend the money on life-saving machines for hospitals.

The National newspaper reports Sir Mekere making the statement after the PNG Trade Union Congress appealed to the Australian government to help fund life-saving hospital equipment.

He says it is shameful that PNG has to ask Australia to buy equipment for its hospitals.

Sir Mekere says the unions and people must urge Sir Michael to find the money to buy the essential equipment instead of begging other nations and donor agencies.
