Hundreds in French Polynesia march to protest against political instability

Hundreds of people in French Polynesia have taken part in march to call for an early election and to protest against the political instability.

Organised by the small Porinetia Ora Party, which has no representation in the assembly, the march coincided with the visit to Tahiti by the French overseas territories minister, Marie-Luce Penchard.

The minister has held talks with political leaders about France's latest plan to change the electoral system.

She has not ruled out that the French President Nicolas Sarkozy will call elections before 2013.

The electoral reforms call for the territory to be divided into two parts with two different election systems for the new assembly whose size is to be cut by at least six seats.
