The head of the Fiji police, Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua, says this year more than 1,000 complaints have been lodged against police officers.
In a statement, Brigadier General Naivalurua says the cases are alarming and need to be addressed immediately.
He says 291 cases were reported in relation to unprofessional behaviour and conduct of police officers.
From mid-2007 until last August, the force was run by Commodore Esala Teleni, who planned changes to its operations so that it would be run similar to the way the military executes its duties and roles.
He also adopted what he called the Jesus strategy as what he termed the only solution for crime in Fiji.
Commodore Teleni also maintained that the police would provide the platform for Christian crusades throughout the country.
