Basic errors costly for Kumuls

Papua New Guinea have a week to tidy up the basics after a disappointing 42-0 defeat to Australia in their opening Four Nations rugby league clash yesterday.

The Kangaroos led 26-0 at half-time, helped by some rudimentary defensive errors from the Kumuls on their own goal-line.

Winger Lote Tuqiri, playing his first rugby league test for Australia in eight years, says while the scoreboard wasn't to PNG's favour he felt the visitors played with a lot of grit and attitude.

The Kumuls now travel to New Zealand, where they will play the Kiwis in Rotorua on Saturday.

In the earlier fixture at Parramatta Stadium, Samoa ended their brief international season on a positive note, defeating Tonga 22-6.

Richard Fa'aoso opened the scoring for Tonga in the 26th minute but four unanswered tries helped Toa Samoa atone for last weeks heavy defeat to New Zealand.
