PNG police say some officers should focus on policing duties

The police in Papua New Guinea are pushing for officers to end the practice of work on the side to make sure they focus on their policing duties.

Already a senior office has been charged with corruption and accused of receiving a double salary - one from the police force and another from another government agency -- since January 2008.

A police spokesman, Dominic Kakas, says PNG suffers from a shortage of officers, but recruit drives are underway:

"Just last Friday we had 192 recruits coming out of Bomana police college and we're set to slowly increase the number of policmen. We've got a government directive to follow. They want us to to beef up to about ten thousand by 2014."
