Fiji's National Council of Women is worried the country's first casino may instead lead to women and children being exploited through prostitution.
The interim government has invited expressions of interest for the casino development project last week in the hope of boosting tourism from Asia, America and Europe.
The General Secretary of the National Council of Women in Fiji, Fay Volatabu, says she fears existing problems of children being caught up in the sex trade will only worsen if the casino goes ahead.
"What I'm worried about is that with gambling comes other social ills. Gambling and sex and money and all kinds of things it comes with. And also already we have low incomes, the tendency for money to be gambled away is also something that we are very worried about."
Fay Volatabu says the National Council of Women wants to be consulted about the casino development and its social impact.
