Electoral law easy to change to reflect custom practice - Vanuatu MP

7:09 am on 8 November 2010

A Vanuatu MP says there just needs to be political will to integrate customary rules in the country's electoral laws.

The government has called on members of parliament and political parties to look at the issue.

After the 2008 election, some members of parliament lost their seats after traditional gift giving was deemed to be bribery. .

Ralph Reganvanu says one of those MPs spoke to the house, and is adamant he did nothing wrong, but that the law is at fault.

"If people are going to start to call traditional practices of gift giving and showing respect through giving of items of traditional wealth, that's not going to be good for custom. And it's also not good for developing our laws with regard to controlling bribery, controlling corruption, and penalising [it]."

Ralph Reganvanu says drafting a law making the distinction between custom practices and electoral law should be a relatively easy task.
