11:20 am on 17 November 2010

Vanuatu's department of public works has started work on the road that will lead to the the country's first correctional facility.

The road is being funded by the Vanuatu government but the correctional centre is funded by the New Zealand government for over 434-thousand US dollars.

Vanuatu's Minister of Justice and Community Services, Bakoa Kaltongga, praised New Zealand for its patience for the two year delay in getting the paperwork for the project completed.

The new correctional centre will provide inmates with skills training to help them return to their communities as qualified individuals to join the work force.
