US open to discussing American Samoan status

4:07 pm on 17 November 2010

The United States says it is open to discussing American Samoa's political status.

The Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Insular Affairs, Anthony Babauta, who has just visited Pago Pago, says in talks with local leaders no specific has been put to him.

He says any US position will depend on what will be put to it after discussions among American Samoans.

"I try to refrain from having an official position while these discussions are ongoing with the community. I see the department having more of a role afterwards, after things have been decided, after the voices of the community have been heard and documented and whatever has been put together either how to advance political status moving forward or how to amend the constitution."
