An Auckland University political scientist says people in Fiji will want an explanation for the resignation of the interim minister of defence and acting prime minister.

Ratu Epeli Ganilau, who's being replaced by the interim Minister for Primary Industries, Joketani Cokanasiga, told the Fijivillage website he's resigned for personal reasons.

The permanent secretary for information, Sharon Smith-Johns, says the interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimamara, will explain the resignation upon his return from China at the weekend.

Dr Steven Ratuva says what happens next hinges on how Commodore Bainimarama reconfigures his cabinet.

"He also will need to respond to the speculation, he'll need to say precisely the reason for the resignation, because it's very important especially given the fact that the resignation is from a position which is very crucial in relation to national security so people will be very very eager to know precisely what's been happening."
