Vanuatu govt cuts annual budget

The Vanuatu government has cut its annual budget.

It has outlined spending plans for 2011 that cut expenditure by more than 400 million vatu or nearly five million US dollars.

It comes after a fall in anticipated revenue of around 20 million US dollars.

Plummetting income had earlier prompted the government to recruit additional customs staff but our correspondent reports that this hasn't made any difference.

The finance minister, Sela Molisa, has also asked for the assistance of Australian experts to improve tax collection.
