A French Polynesian member of the French Senate, Richard Tuheiava, has submitted two amendments to the law covering compensation for victims of the French nuclear weapons tests.
Mr Tuheiava says he wants that the atolls of Moruroa and Fangataufa, used for the weapons tests, be officially returned to French Polynesia after having been excised for the needs of the military.
He says he also wants a commission to be set up in French Polynesia to look at the tests' effects not only on people but on the environment.
Mr Tuheiava says the official debate has to go beyond what he calls lies and denials.
The compensation law, recognising a link between the tests and possible ill health, was adopted last year but widely decried in French Polynesia as inadequate.
France had earlier said its test were safe and clean.
