Tonga's nobles gather to select MPs

11:04 am on 25 November 2010

Tonga's nobility has gathered at the palace office in Nuku'alofa to select nine members of parliament.

The country has gone to the polls today to elect a Parliament where a majority of members are ordinary citizens.

Richard Pamatatau reports from Tonga.

"The nobles vote is expected to be finalised by noon. In the past they have dominated Parliament as they are recognised as allies of the King, but the political changes mean power may be more evenly spread. Turnout is high at the general polling stations and preliminary results are expected by 7pm. The polls close at 4.30pm."
