The Solomon Islands government has reaffirmed its commitment to support the legal team of the former fisheries minister Jimmy Lusibaea who was jailed yesterday.
Lusibaea pleaded guilty to charges related to the ethnic tension and was imprisoned for two years and nine months.
Prime Minister's top advisor, Andrew Muaki, says according to section 51 of the constitution, as long as Lusibaea appeals his case the Speaker of Parliament can extend his term as MP to no more than 150 days.
Mr Muaki says Lusibaea has 30 days in which he can appeal his case.
