Fiji regime at Bali Democracy Forum

3:28 pm on 8 December 2010

Fiji's interim foreign minister, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, is to attend the Bali Democracy Forum later this week.

Ratu Inoke says he will tell the gathering of 50 countries that in line with the presidential mandate, true democratic elections for parliamentary representation will be held by September 2014.

He says the world has witnessed that scores of countries have chosen the path of democracy and majority of its people now believe that democracy is the best form of government.

The Fiji interim regime came to power four years ago this week when the military removed the government in a coup just six months after an election deemed by international observers as free and fair.

Since April last year, the regime has applied emergency rules, with the military commander saying the parties ousted in the coup will not be allowed to get back into power.
