A French union delegate says he has discussed the gradual decrease of civilian staff within the military during talks with top defence officials in French Polynesia.
The La Depeche newspaper says as part of a phased reduction of the French military presence over the next five years, more than 200 positions will be disestablished.
The unionist, Patrick Daulny, says this means about 250 positions will be retained.
He says the military could not say whether it will at one stage leave French Polynesia altogether.
