MPs in Tonga vote for Prime Minister

10:53 am on 21 December 2010

Tonga's 26 MPs have completed their secret ballot for the country's prime minister and these are now being counted in the speaker's office.

There are two candidates for the position, the noble Tu'ivakano and the pro-democracy leader, Akilisi Pohiva.

If either of them gets a majority of the votes King George Tupou the 5th will be advised.

Once his endorsement is given the MPs will be told who the victor is.

If the vote is evenly split then the parliament will sit again later this week for a second ballot.
