American Samoa worried about homemade bombs in schools

8:16 am on 22 December 2010

American Samoa's Assistant Attorney General says the use of explosive devices is a growing problem in schools.

Several students from Tafuna and Samoana high schools set off cherry or acid bombs on school campuses.

Explosives of any kind are illegal in the territory

Terry Bullinger says people need to be made aware of what the children do.

"The more that people could be aware of what the kids have in a room or if they hear an explosion, respond to it, see who is running away. Help use that village pressure of behaviour. It's a nuisance."

Terry Bullinger said cherry bombs are being created from gear found on fishing boats and students are learning how to make these bombs off the internet.

Schools are now on recess for the holidays.
